Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I can’t believe it is August already. The summer, filled with so many festivities and events,  has been so much fun! Very soon it will be time to be thinking about school and finding more time to improve our lives and expand our knowledge. One of the marvelous assets that Palos Hills provides, is their excellent library! However, before I tell you about the library in Palos Hills, let me tell you how far libraries have come in America.
Private libraries have existed in America from early colonial times. Ministers and doctors had small private collections, as did churches and colleges. These collections ranged from a few dozen to a few hundred books.
Benjamin Franklin had over 4,000 books in his own library at the time of his death. He started a social library where books were shared among members of a literary society. Thomas Jefferson had such an extensive library that his collection was the basis of the Library of Congress in 1814!
The first children’s libraries were founded in the 1890’s. By 1908, circulation of materials to children accounted for around one-third of total library lending. Today there are roughly 9,000 public libraries in the United States plus another 8,000 if branch libraries are counted.

The Green Hills Public Library District is a true asset to the community. It was a dream of a dedicated few in 1962. The library was to serve Palos Hills and Hickory Hills. Today it stands as a beautiful, serviceable monument to learning, culture, and the dedication of many. If you are interested in reading more, there is a section on their web site under the heading, History of the Library.

The Green Hills Public Library  is so much more than just a place to read. There is something for everybody, and I am talking more than just books, friends and neighbors. There are reading programs for children. Library tours are available.  There is so much more.
For teens, there is research assistance, homework help, and volunteer opportunities. For adults, there is also research assistance, planned events, and homebound delivery. If you go to the web site you will see classes, such as crocheting and basic computer knowledge that are offered. There are movie nights. The movie “Going in Style” is offered in September. There is no limit to what this haven of understanding and learning provides. At their web site is a monthly calendar showing dates and times of crafts, movies, etc. Look carefully. Family nights! No way!! There is even a Bingo Night! Look for me. I might see you there!
